Phantom PHANTOM OF INFERNO NITRO ARCHIVE Cal Devens
A Los Angeles slum girl who tries to hire justice, then becomes Drei when Inferno finishes the job Zwei could not prevent.
Cal Devens is Chapter 2’s test of whether Zwei learned anything from being manufactured. She is a slum kid in Los Angeles who thinks a professional killer might be a tool for justice, pays him with money that already belongs to Inferno, and then cannot be put back on the street. Protect her clumsily and Inferno still takes her. Protect her carefully and the visual novel still has Scythe waiting. The Steam remake uses the 2009 television design and Sawashiro Miyuki’s voice — the same Cal as the anime, Japanese audio only. The hero screenshot on this page is Zwei teaching her to shoot, which is both kindness and the first step toward Drei.

Readers compare her to Mathilda in Léon for a reason: a young girl hunting revenge for a destroyed family, attaching to a hitman, picking up his trade. Phantom is meaner about what that attachment costs. Cal can stay a civilian-adjacent partner for a surprisingly short list of flags. Miss one and the script pretends you never met her. Hit them all and she becomes Drei, German for three, Scythe Master’s next iteration after Ein and Zwei.
Before Drei
Cal is not an Inferno plant. She is local wreckage. Los Angeles under Isaac Wisemel’s Bloodies and Inferno’s wider war does not leave children a clean side of the street. She tries to hire Zwei because she has seen enough corpses to believe a precise killer is more honest than the police. The money in her pocket is the mistake. Inferno tracks its cash. Hiding her becomes a job Zwei was not assigned.
He asks that she be kept as his assistant the way he was kept as Ein’s. That request is love, strategy, and hubris at once. It is also the only language Inferno understands: do not throw away useful flesh. Training scenes follow. The Steam image of the two of them with a pistol is that curriculum — stance, breath, the ugly idea that a slum girl might live longer if she can shoot. Sawashiro plays Cal bright and sharp here, closer to a kid who found a big brother than to the later numbered weapon.
A loft explosion, a failed extraction, and a year of believing Zwei abandoned her are what Scythe needs. He does not have to invent her hatred. He only has to confirm it. Drei is Cal with that confirmation installed: flashy, insubordinate, addicted to revenge, and still carrying the pocket watch Zwei bought her from a street vendor before a counter-snipe job. The watch is not cute merch. Chapter 3 will put it on a church altar and wait for the music to die, a nod to For a Few Dollars More that the script earns.
The strict flag route
Cal’s Chapter 2 path is the pickiest in the game. Almost every beat is “Cal or something else,” and the something else deletes her. Answer the homeless girl. Talk longer at the restaurant. Go shopping. Trust her when the easy answer is not to. Turn her down once and later scenes play as if the meeting never happened, which can feel like a bug the first time you see it. It is not a bug. The flags are binary on purpose. Inferno either kept this child in Zwei’s orbit or it did not.
The exception is refusing her confession specifically: she can still exist in the plot, but you lose Southbound-style kindness and can eat a dead end where Ein shoots you in a desert warehouse. Completing Claudia’s Chapter 1 and then starting Cal’s Chapter 2 will also force a house choice. Visit Claudia and you have left Cal’s true line. Stay out of that house if Dusty Desert Trails is the point of the run. The walkthrough is the click-by-click version of this paragraph. Memorize the spirit before you memorize the menu: if the option mentions Cal, take it.
You generally cannot reach Chapter 3’s Cal close without Ein’s Chapter 1 path as well. The three numbered assassins are a single machine by then. Confirm the sniper during the counter-snipe. Confirm the harbor attackers. After the loft bomb, hide rather than “kill everyone.” Hide-with-full-Cal-and-incomplete-Ein can still give you Fugitives, a Chapter 2 runaway ending that is hers in a smaller way. Hide-with-the-Chapter-3 prerequisites sends the pair toward Japan with Cal alive, furious, and already listening to Scythe. That fury is the fuel Dusty Desert Trails burns.
Drei
Drei is not a costume change. She is Cal after Scythe’s process and after a year of thinking Zwei lied. She will take jobs her own way, mouth off to executives, and treat Ein as a rival product. Inferno still uses her because she works. Steam’s achievement list includes both Cal and Drei as names. Cal is the girl you shopped with. Drei is the third subject. This wiki will not invent a hidden extra unlock beyond what the overlay prints; seeing both names pop across a long save is normal if you actually lived those chapters.
In a fight she is closer than Ein. Ein disappears into a scope. Drei wants you to know she arrived. That flashiness is why Chapter 3’s church duel can be staged like a western rather than a sniper puzzle. It is also why letting her live as Drei and then asking her to be Cal again is the emotional bet of her true ending. Zwei cannot undo Scythe. He can only stand in front of a knife and hope the girl remembers the vendor who sold them a watch.
If you complete her intimacy flags in Chapter 2 and then hunt Ein in Chapter 3, some editions can twist Cerulean Sky into a worse church. The Integration-era extra close is the famous version of that hesitation. Steam is the 2013 remake port, not the 2004 Integration disc, so treat any extra bad end as something you confirm in the endings guide rather than assume from a forum memory.
Dusty Desert Trails
Cal’s true Chapter 3 ending asks you not to finish Mio’s confession path, then to go after Drei at the last split. Zwei gets Mio Fujieda out of the blast radius without explaining the war. He taunts Cal onto a church clock. He intends to lose. Ein spoils the suicide by forcing Cal wide, and the two girls duel until Zwei takes Ein’s knife in the back on purpose. Cal sees the debt. Ein, wounded later against Godoh men and Scythe’s numbered sisters, can still be the one who shoots Scythe so Cal does not have to die in a chemistry-lab farce.
Time passes. Freelance. A truck into a desert town that might be in Mexico. Targets who use the word gringo. Plans for a holiday after the job. They are Phantom now in the rumor sense — two people the map cannot hold. It is a western fade, not a classroom. Readers who hate spaghetti westerns still tend to admit the ending is the one time Cal gets to want a future that is not revenge. The longplay embedded on this page is a full Dusty Desert Trails close from an older English-script capture of the visual novel. Use it after you have the flags, or as a spoiler-heavy preview if you already know you will not replay Chapter 2’s shopping scenes.
Other Cal-adjacent titles exist. Fugitives is the Chapter 2 runaway. Vengeful Spirits is Zwei storming Inferno because he thinks the loft took her, while she waits three mornings and decides he lied. From Atop the Hill can promote her to Phantom in Colombia if you also finished Claudia. Cherry Blossom Avenue leaves her alive, unpaid, promising to kill Ein and Reiji later because she owes Mio a stay of execution. Cal is rarely gone. She is often unfinished.
How to play her without wasting a week
Start a dedicated save at Chapter 2. Follow Ein’s Chapter 1 notes from the walkthrough. Treat every Cal option as mandatory. Do not visit Claudia’s house when the split appears. Hide after the bomb if you want Japan. In Chapter 3, do not complete Mio’s romance, then choose Drei. Steam’s 34 achievements include Cal and Drei; let them fire naturally. If you only have time for one Cal document after this page, take the endings guide rather than another biography.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for new Steam players and returning fans.
Who voices Cal Devens on Steam?
Sawashiro Miyuki, reprising the 2009 television role. Audio is Japanese only. Older PC and DVD-PG releases used Koorogi Satomi.
Why do people say Cal's route is strict?
Most Chapter 2 choices are Cal versus not-Cal, and picking the latter removes her from later scenes as if you never met. The walkthrough flags every required click.
What is the difference between Cal and Drei?
Cal is the Los Angeles girl who tries to hire Zwei. Drei is the same person after Scythe's process and a year of thinking she was abandoned. Steam lists achievements under both names.
Which ending is Cal's true close?
Dusty Desert Trails, the Chapter 3 western fade. Fugitives is a smaller Chapter 2 runaway. See the endings guide for flags, including the church duel setup.
Do I need Ein's route to get Cal's true ending?
Yes. Chapter 3's Cal close expects Ein's Chapter 1 path plus Cal's Chapter 2 flags, identity checks, and hiding after the loft bomb. Skipping Ein usually locks you out of Japan.
Is the longplay on this page the Steam client?
It is a visual-novel capture of Cal's true ending, useful for the Dusty Desert Trails structure. Steam's 2013 remake uses the anime designs and Sawashiro's voice; the plot beats of that close still match.
