Phantom PHANTOM OF INFERNO NITRO ARCHIVE Controls

Typical ADV keys for the Steam remake, plus where to confirm the live list.

Controls

Phantom PHANTOM OF INFERNO NITRO ARCHIVE is a keyboard-and-mouse cinematic ADV on Steam. You will spend most of the runtime advancing text, opening a menu to save, and occasionally picking a choice. There is no aiming reticle, no cooldown bar, and no multiplayer overlay to bind. What you do need is a stable habit for advance, skip, backlog, and Config, because the story will punish a missed flag long after the line has left the screen.

This page describes typical ADV controls used by the 2013 Windows remake lineage that Steam ships. It is not a screenshot of your Config. NITRO PLUS publishes an official online manual for startup, environment, and on-screen operation. Open that manual, then open Config in the live build, and treat those two as the authority. If a label here disagrees with the build you launched, the build wins.

Typical mouse and keyboard

Left click advances text and confirms a highlighted choice. Enter does the same from the keyboard. That pair is the entire “play” verb for long stretches of Chapter 1. Right click opens the system menu; Esc does the same. From that menu you reach save, load, config, and title. Do not bind your muscle memory to a console controller diagram from 2012 until you have checked whether your Steam install even lists a pad. This wiki assumes mouse and keyboard because that is how the Windows port is meant to be read.

Hold Ctrl to skip. On a second loop this is how you reach the next unread choice without listening to training a third time. Config should let you restrict skip to already-read text; leave that restriction on until you are following a chart and you accept the risk. Mouse wheel typically opens or scrolls the backlog so you can recover a name you clicked past. If the wheel does nothing, look in Config before you assume the port is broken. Space or a face-button equivalent may also advance; again, confirm in the live list.

Choices are clicked. There is no timer. Arrow keys or the mouse move the highlight; left click or Enter locks it. Because Phantom stores flags instead of showing a meter, a misclick is a route change. If you highlight the wrong line, Esc or right click should return you to the menu so you can load the save you made thirty seconds earlier. If you did not make that save, that is a How to Play problem, not a keybind problem.

Config: speed, auto, volume, window

Open Config from the title screen before New Game, then open it again from the in-game menu after the first voice line so you can hear the 2009 cast at a level that does not clip. Text speed controls how fast a line draws. Auto-read advances without a click; set the delay long enough that Japanese takes are not cut off. Volume is usually split across voice, BGM, and sound effects. Voices are Japanese only. English, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese text options sit in the same settings neighborhood as these sliders; pick the text language on first launch as described in Getting Started.

Window versus fullscreen is a comfort setting, not a quality preset. Official specs list 1920×1080 32-bit TrueColor and note that screen size is variable. If alt-tab is painful, stay windowed. If you want the opening movie to fill the monitor, use fullscreen and remember that Esc still has to reach the menu. Do not chase frame-rate options you will not find; this is an ADV. If the movie stutters or the game refuses to start, that is a DirectX 11 / Windows 11 / RAM conversation on system requirements, not a missing “sprint” key.

Save slots, load, and not trusting a single file

Save and load are menu screens with multiple slots. Use them constantly. Keep a rolling slot, a pre-choice freeze, and a chapter-start copy. The chapter password system sits beside those files: when a chapter ends, write the password down and keep the save that produced it. Controls will not generate a password for you. They only have to get you into the save screen before you click the line that kills a route.

Quick-save / quick-load keys exist in many ADVs. If this build offers them, Config or the official manual will show the binding. Do not assume F5/F9 from a different engine. Do not assume Steam Cloud will babysit a deleted folder. Treat local slots as the truth. If a load list looks empty after a reboot, check that you are launching the same Steam install and that you did not copy a 2013 retail save from a different path expecting it to appear automatically.

Backlog is your reread tool. Recollection mode does not exist, so the backlog is the only way to recover a sentence without loading. Scroll back, read Ein’s line again, then close the log and continue. CG mode and sound mode are extras galleries, not controls. They do not need hotkeys during a scene. Skip, auto, and menu do.

Confirm, then play

Before Chapter 1’s first fork, prove four things in order: left click advances, right click opens the menu, a save file writes, and Ctrl skip can be cancelled. Then set text language, voice volume, and window mode. Then read. The How to Play page explains why skip and saves matter to flags. The walkthrough is the chart you should not need until those four proofs are done. The endings guide is for later loops, not for learning skip. The Guides Hub links every other how-to. If a key does nothing, stop guessing from this table and open the official online manual plus in-game Config. That loop is the whole controls guide: typical ADV defaults, then the live build, then the manual.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for new Steam players and returning fans.

How do I advance text?

Left click or Enter on typical ADV defaults. Confirm the live binding in Config and in the [official online manual](https://support.nitroplus.co.jp/manual/origin/phantom/).

How do I skip and reread?

Hold Ctrl to skip; use the mouse wheel for backlog on typical defaults. Restrict skip to already-read text until you are on a later loop. See How to Play.

Where is the authoritative control list?

In-game Config and NITRO PLUS's [official online manual](https://support.nitroplus.co.jp/manual/origin/phantom/). This page is a typical ADV summary, not a replacement.

Can I play windowed?

Yes. Config handles window versus fullscreen. Native output is 1920×1080 with variable size. If launch fails, check system requirements.

Do I need a controller?

No. The Steam Windows port is meant to be read with mouse and keyboard. Only use a pad if Config lists it. Start with the keys in Getting Started.

The game will not start. Is that a control issue?

Usually not. Confirm Windows 11, DirectX 11, and RAM on system requirements, then use the official manual's startup chapter.
